The Department of Plant Growing was the first structural subdivision created to provide teaching of special disciplines in Sumy branch of Kharkiv ASI named after V.V. Dokuchaev. Today, the scientific work of the Department of Plant Growing is aimed at solving the problems of technological and selection support of the crop industry in the north-eastern forest-steppe and Polissya of Ukraine.

For more than 40 years at the department under the guidance of Professor Zhatov O.G., later Trotsenko V.I., Zhatova G.O. and Melnyk A.V. were prepared and defended more than 20 dissertations for the degree of candidate agricultural sciences.

The staff of the department is a participant in the development of agro-industrial complex development of Sumy region for the period: sections “Oilseeds”; “Grain crops” 2011-2015; section “Oilseeds” 2016-2020

During the last 5 years the staff of the department has completed 5 scientific topics: 0109U001732, 0110U001040; 0110U001041; 0111U004562; 0114U003284. The research results are implemented in agricultural production of Sumy, Chernihiv and Poltava regions, are used in the scientific work of NAAS institutions, as well as in the educational process in training of specialists in specialties: Agronomy, Plant Protection, Land Management and Cadastre.

Today, the main research is related to the implementation of the following research topics:
