The Educational and Scientific Laboratory of Entomology operates with the aim of wide involvement of scientific and pedagogical staff and students of all levels of the university in conducting basic research and implementation of applied developments in priority areas of scientific and innovative activities.
Laboratory research is carried out in the following areas:
- determining of the impact of agri-environmental factors on the development of pests and the development of scientific bases for the management of phytosanitary conditions of plantations and crops;
- studying of the peculiarities of the formation of agrobiocenoses in modern systems of integrated protection against phytophagous, depending on the predecessors, methods of basic tillage and plant nutrition systems;
- elucidation of the consequences of optimization of pesticide load with the use of integrated crop protection in different areas on harmful and beneficial entomofauna;
- studying of the effectiveness of new pesticides against pests and development of recommendations on the technology of their use;
- determination of soil infestation by nematodes and development of recommendations for crop protection against this parasite.
The laboratory is a structural educational and scientific subdivision of the Faculty of Agrotechnologies and Environmental use.
The main tasks of the laboratory are:
- conducting laboratory and practical classes at a high scientific, methodological and technical level with students of specialties 202 “Plant Protection and Quarantine”, 201 “Agronomy”, 206 “Garden Design”, 205 “Forestry”;
- assistance in the implementation of scientific work of students, graduate students and teachers;
- promoting the quality of training of specialists in plant protection and quarantine, agronomy through the implementation of practical and creative components of the content of education;
- systematic updating and improvement of the training and laboratory base, technical means of training, computerization and informatization of the educational process;
- creation of safe working conditions at workplaces in accordance with the requirements of current legislation.
The laboratory is located in the assigned auditorium № 21. The teacher’s workplace is equipped with a demonstration table and a classroom board, a device for the use of technical teaching aids, etc. The laboratory is equipped with educational and visual stands, technical means of training.
The laboratory operates on the territory and research and laboratory facilities of the university, has the appropriate material support. It promotes scientific seminars, scientific conferences, meetings of the student scientific group “Plant Protection”, develops the necessary scientific and methodological materials for the educational process in accordance with current and promising areas of educational and scientific work of the university. On the basis of modern methods of monitoring and control of harmful organisms the “Forecast of phytosanitary condition of agrocenoses and recommendations on protection of cultivated plants from pests, diseases and weeds in farms of the Sumy region” is developed.
The laboratory is a base for laboratory and practical classes for higher education students in educational programs 202 “Plant Protection and Quarantine”, 201 “Agronomy”, 206 “Garden design”, 205 “Forestry” in the following disciplines:
- Agricultural entomology;
- Protection of ornamental and flowering plants from pests;
- Protection of field protective forest strips from pests;
- Management of the number of phytophagous insects;
- Technical entomology;
- Ecology of insects;
- Pathology of insects;
- Insect physiology;
- Entomology;
- Forest entomology.
Applicants study in the laboratory the types of polyphagous and specialized pests of crops, plantations, ornamental and flowering plants, field protective forest strips, as well as their entomophagous, limiting the number of pests, the range of victims and hosts on which they grow. In the process of training, species are identified by morphological characteristics, types of plant damage using the latest techniques. Knowledge of taxonomy, biology, ecology, physiology of species is used to develop forecasts for the development and spread of pests to an intangible economic level based on the use of economic thresholds of harmfulness, energy saving and environmental technologies.
Cooperation is offered for Agricultural enterprises, farms, gardeners:
- providing recommendations on the treatment of crop seeds with compositions of protective and stimulating substances and pest control on crops;
- evaluation of the effectiveness of insecticides against pests on crops;
- finding out the reasons for the mass accumulation of harmful entomofauna, parasitic nematodes in the fields of crops and providing recommendations for controlling these dangerous phenomena and avoiding their negative impact on crops and plantations;
- conducting tests to determine the damage to the root system of plants by parasitic nematodes;
- analysis of soil for infection with parasitic nematodes.
International and state budget tenders carried out in the laboratory:
- “Investigate the resistance of genotypes of hemp, flax and oil flax to the main insects of phytophagous, (№ – 0119U100752);
- “Comprehensive protection of the apple orchard in the North-Eastern Forest-Steppe of Ukraine” (№ – 0118U100110);
- Improving the system of protection of crops from pests (Development of a system of protection of crops from pests based on the study of their species composition, biological characteristics, analysis of conditions of development);
- STC: “Isolation of genotypes with high levels of immune properties and soil drought resistance among the modern assortment of soft winter wheat” (State classification code. Rubricator of scientific and technical information DK 022: 2008: 20 – Agricultural sciences, 201 – Agronomy, 202 – Protection and plant quarantine; Co-executors – SNAU and Henan Institute of Science & Technology), 2018-2023.
The laboratory has modern devices and equipment:
– Levenhuk 870T microscope (used to diagnose pests of crops);
– Wile-65 grain moisture meter (used to measure grain moisture (seeds) of agricultural crops);
– MBS microscopes (9 pcs.) (Stereoscopic microscope, which examines both thin samples and bulk objects, both in transmitted and reflected light);
